Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Radical Islamic preachers have become influential in certain parts of Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where they often have a significant impact on youth attitudes toward militant ideologies. In Gwale Local Government Area, Kano State, the influence of radical preachers has raised concerns about the potential for youth radicalization and involvement in violent extremism. The rise of groups like Boko Haram and other extremist factions has been linked to the spread of radical ideologies, which often take root in impoverished and disenfranchised communities. According to Shehu (2024), radical preachers are often able to exploit these vulnerabilities, recruiting young people by framing violent extremism as a legitimate religious duty. This study seeks to investigate the role of radical Islamic preachers in fostering youth militancy in Gwale, exploring the mechanisms of influence, the responses of the local community, and the broader implications for security in Kano State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The spread of radical ideologies among youth in Gwale has led to concerns about the growing involvement of young people in militant activities. Radical preachers, through their sermons and social media presence, are often seen as key figures in this process of radicalization. However, there is limited research on how these preachers influence the youth in Gwale LGA and the specific impact on militancy in the area. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the role of radical Islamic preachers in youth radicalization and militancy in Gwale.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the influence of radical Islamic preachers on youth militancy in Gwale LGA.

  • To evaluate the factors that contribute to the susceptibility of youth in Gwale to radicalization.

  • To explore the strategies employed by local authorities and communities to counter the influence of radical preachers.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do radical Islamic preachers influence youth militancy in Gwale LGA?

  • What factors contribute to the susceptibility of youth in Gwale to radicalization?

  • What strategies can be employed to counter the influence of radical preachers in Gwale?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Radical Islamic preachers do not significantly influence youth militancy in Gwale LGA.

  • H₁: Radical Islamic preachers significantly influence youth militancy in Gwale LGA.

  • H₂: Local strategies effectively counter the influence of radical Islamic preachers in Gwale LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of religious leaders in radicalizing youth and contributing to the spread of militant ideologies in northern Nigeria. The findings will inform policymakers, religious leaders, and community organizations in designing counter-radicalization programs that can reduce the appeal of extremist ideologies and promote peace and security.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the influence of radical Islamic preachers in Gwale LGA, Kano State, and will examine the mechanisms of radicalization within the youth population. It will not extend to other regions or aspects of radicalization. A limitation of the study is the potential challenge in accessing information from individuals or groups who may be involved in militant activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Radical Islamic Preachers: Religious figures who promote extreme interpretations of Islam and encourage militant ideologies.

  • Youth Militancy: The involvement of young individuals in violent or armed resistance movements, often based on political or religious ideologies.

  • Radicalization: The process through which individuals or groups adopt extremist beliefs that justify the use of violence to achieve their goals.
